Govt .Degree College, Majalta was established in July 2016 vide Govt. Order No:242-HE of 2016, Dated 05/07/2016 with nine subjects viz. English, Political Science, Economics, Hindi, Urdu, Mathematics, Computer Applications and Environmental Science against the ten sanctioned posts of Assistant Professors in a make shift accommodation at Govt. Middle School, Baryalta. In its initial academic session i.e., 2016-17, a total of 10 students were admitted in the college, majority of which were girl students coming from far flung places of the area who had to discontinue their studies due to non-availability of institution of higher learning in the area. Currently the college has only two semesters with student strength of 141 as a whole. At present, the College provides instructions in the discipline of Arts only. A sizable section of students joining this institution comes from such families that mainly depend on agriculture and are economically as well as socially weak. In the light of the Court order, litigation in the identification of the land for establishment of college and in anticipation of increase in the strength of the students for the coming academic session 2018-19, Higher Education Department, J&K allowed shifting of the college to a rented private building at Battal, Majalta w.e.f. Ist May 2018.
